Certifications: how to read them (and which ones you actually need)
GMP is not one thing
“GMP” gets used as if it’s a single standard, it isn’t. Dietary supplement GMP in the US is governed by 21 CFR Part 111. Pharmaceutical cGMP falls under 21 CFR Parts 210/211, a considerably stricter standard. Cosmetics GMP in the EU follows ISO 22716. Ask specifically which GMP framework a provider is certified under, “we’re GMP certified” alone doesn’t tell you which one.
ISO 9001, ISO 22000, HACCP, SQF, BRCGS
ISO 9001 is a general quality management standard, not product-specific. ISO 22000 and HACCP relate to food safety management. SQF and BRCGS are food safety certification schemes more common in North America and the UK/EU respectively. None of these alone confirms GMP compliance, they’re complementary, not substitutes for each other.
FDA facility registration vs. FDA “approval”
This distinction matters more than most brands realize: FDA facility registration means a facility is registered in FDA’s database, it is not the same as FDA approval or endorsement of a product. No dietary supplement or cosmetic product is “FDA approved” in the way a drug is. Be wary of any provider that implies otherwise.

European Union
